Books are better when you discover that they have words in them.
Words are better when you can read them.
Jao found the book.
An older boy at the library saw
that Jao could not yet read,
so he asked, "Shall I read to you?"
He should. Unprompted, they sat together and Jao watched the words become a story; one he might remember.
Nothing lasts forever, of course, so when the older boy's younger brother eased by, something like an inside-tornado, Jao put the life of the mind aside, for the nonce, and joined him at developing grosser motor skills.

That's exactly how it happened! -- Mari
