We blond, blue-eyed lovers of liberty: right?

However much it damages our cheap jokes, we know that blonds are neither brighter nor more stupid than the rest of us unless, of course, they are artificial blonds.  Why would you want blond hair with dark roots?  Or black hair with gray roots?  


We do know, don't we, that all terrorists are Muslim, probably with beards and brown eyes.  Except when they are blond and blue-eyed.  And maybe Norwegian.  


Anders Behring Breivik just blew up a part of Oslo, Norway, and shot almost a hundred young people at a summer camp:  twice, when he could, just to make sure.  He hated Muslims, left-wing politicians, probably because they allowed brown-eyed, Muslim people to live in Norway.  


I don't want to make clever comments about blonds or Muslims or fundamentalist religious people.  Another hundred people have died for ideology.  Thousands of Iraqis and Afganis and soldiers from around the world have done so, too.  It is enough to cause one to look up what the Hundred Year War between Catholics and Protestants was about.  Or the Troubles in Ireland.  The hopeless mess between the Palestinians and Israelis.  The wars in Vietnam and Korea.  India and Pakistan.  And, on a less physical, but no less intolerant level, what the Tea Party is a result of.  


Government is evil!  Blow it up, actually, or economically.  Or that paying for our common life is awful:  schools, pensions, health care, unemployment!  But maybe wars are OK!


Here in our house, we have a cat with a screw loose.  Every now and then, she bites me.  I am trying to get used to it.  Orphan is brindle, not blond and blue-eyed.  Not Muslim.  Not Norwegian.  Just a crazy cat with a loose screw.  Like some Muslims.  Like some Norwegians.  Like some Tea Party people waving Nazi posters.  Like some of the rest of us.


We are the people who say we hate government, hate taxes, hate politicians.  We are the ones who turn them loose with guns.  We listen to Rush Limbaugh rant about women, liberals, immigrants, taxes, and conspiracies.  We listen to the Birthers blather on about Obama being born in Kenya, about him not being a loyal American, about him being Black, and not blond and blue-eyed like us.  


Right?

    I fear the only way the world would be at peace would be if we were identical, truly equal grey blobs.

Friends-- My step-father of 35 years died this morning. His name was Conrad Royksund. He was 86 years old. He was born into poverty on a farm near Puyallup, WA. The Sea is Rising

Let us just step back:  two hundred and fifty years ago, or so, the ships of England and Spain had drifted onto a whole new continent, as they saw it, from far north to a savagely cold south; pole to pole, as if there were such things. Millions of people already lived here, some of them still hunters and gatherers; some of them very wealthy, indeed!  Gold and silver stolen from the southern Americas funded Spanish and English dreams. There was land, lots of land, under starry skies above, rich land, and oil and coal and iron ore.  The whole western world learned how to build industries not on simple muscle power, but on steam and oil.  We farmed, too, of course.  All we needed was cheap labor--slave labor from Africa, mostly, so the ships came with slave labor.  Chinese labor built railroad beds where there had been rock cliffs. Nice to Run Into You Again

We do not see things in enormous time-frames.  We human beings are fairly new at figuring things out for ourselves.  For instance, some  people today still think of the earth as a newly created thing, perhaps ten thousand years old.  Earth is actually about four-and-a-half billion years old.   That is to say, the earth is 450,000 times older than the Adam and Eve story, and the universe is three times older than that! I recall first hearing that continents were slowly drifting around the earth, and that there quite likely had been several times when the continents were squeezed together.  But people could stand on the edge of their own continents, and not see Africa or Asia getting closer.  It took at least fifty years to figure things out. We called our continent something special. But sure enough, there have been numerous times during several-billion year history of the earth, when supercontinents formed, and eventually drifted off. ...
